  Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges. At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums. The injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed.

This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and almost any case can be completed in one single visit. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 96% of cases. Most patients are concerned about having a “dead tooth” after the endodontic therapy. The procedure consists in removing, only, the internal irrigation system, leaving the external nerve system intact so you can feel your tooth normally. The endodontic treatment doesn’t prevent new decays, so you must continue practicing a good dental hygiene.

A) Before Endodontic Treatment

This procedure will be performed using local anesthesia. There are usually no restrictions after the procedure concerning driving or returning to work. Dr. Priscila will answer you at all times should a problem arise after your treatment. Continue all medications for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems and any other conditions as recommended by your physician. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment. Please eat a full breakfast or lunch as applicable. If you have been advised by your physician or dentist to use antibiotic premedication because of mitral valve prolapse (MVP), heart murmur, hip, knee, cardiac or other prosthesis, or if you have rheumatic heart disease, please make sure you have 2 grams of Amoxicilin (4 tablets at once) 1 hour before your appointment. If you’re allergic to penicilin, please contact Dr. Priscila so she can prescribe you a proper antibiotic. If there is any question, please call our office prior to your appointment. If you can take ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol), it does help reduce inflammation when taken pre-operatively. We recommend 2 tablets of each medication 2-4 hours before endodontic therapy.

B) Discomfort

Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with the definitive restoration. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil – 1 tablet each 12 hours) and acetaminophen (Tylenol - 1 tablet each 4 hours). NOTE: Alcohol intake is not advised while taking any of these medications. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact this office immediately.

C) Home Care

Endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. A follow-up restoration must be placed to protect your tooth against fracture and decay. Make sure you schedule another appointment so we can replace the temporary filling for a proper restoration. Included in your treatment is a follow-up examination to evaluate the progress of healing. This appointment will require only a few minutes and no additional fee will be charged for the first check-up visit. Please call for an appointment during the following month.
